Cathednet Flyaround - Connecting Kimberley Remote Schools
During 2003 all the Catholic Schools in Western Australia were connected in a virtual private network, Cathednet. Cathedent included an email system and a student learning and application system called Sina.
There was difficulty connecting a number of remote schools, particularly in the Kimberley. Seven of the schools mentioned in the Flyaround were connected by satellite links which were limited by bandwidth, latency as well as shared upload/download. The Adult Education Centre, Balgo, was connected via an infra red link to Luurnpa School which was able to be connected via the Balgo microwave linked telephone exchange.
As of 2017, 4 schools remain connected by satellite with hopes for upgraded links so these schools can take full part in an increasingly online learning environment.
